So, it turns out that X11 wasn't actually installed on the centOS. There didn't seem to be any indication anywhere of it not being installed. I did the following command and now firefox opens:. It just was unable to resolve localhost name In my case the issue was caused due to mismatch in.

As I say I am a novice at this so some help would be appreciated. Are you logging on using ssh -X. You need to use an X session to open GUI applications from the server. This assumes that the server's ssh server is configured to support X and that your client is Unix or that you have an Xserver installed to your client operating system. Does the error message have anything else to say? As carnish said ssh needs "X11 forwarding" ssh -X to work on a remote display through an ssh tunnel.
However this will be possibly really slow. You may want to try, if it's possible, to start a VNC server on the remote and connect to it from a vncviewer on the local machine either through ssh [using ssh -L If you do this you can start LO after you logged into the server and it will use its "virtual" display.

Thanks for the response. I also have cygwin application installed. After issuing startx from the cygwin application i will get a X icon at the bottom of the task window. The X server appears as an 'X' icon in the Windows system tray on your taskbar. Let me know how to rectify the same. Honored Contributor. I am using the windows Xming. I get it to work and display things and it works for a bit, but it then freezes up. Aneurin Do you know why emacs cannot be resized? When I run emacsI get a window that looks like your screen shot above, except with a blank white box where you have the main buffer and the minibuffer. Maybe you need to reconfigure the port used by xrdp to avoid collision with the remote desktop server of Windows. It only takes a minute to sign up. The server config permits x11 forwarding. Testing with a new sshd instance in debug I see this when connecting. The only relevant part of debug I could tell:. The user is a standard user with sudo access and I otherwise have no issue everything is cli works fine.
Using ssh -v while connecting does not give any more useful feedback when the error shows up.

Permissions are fine to create it however. Xauthority file is not created, this can mean that, though X11 forwarding is taken into account, xauth is not run. One reason could be that it is not in the path I had this problem under Mac OS X, but this would be strange under Linux. For instance, I have the following:. I keep getting this error. Error: Can't open display: localhost Miati Miati 1, 2 2 gold badges 13 13 silver badges 22 22 bronze badges. Check on the remote machine whether netstat -l grep outputs lines saying that there are listening sockets on localhost I'm not sure, but ip6-localhost seems to be wrong. This isn't a problem for the network, but this may yield authentication failures. Give also xauth list output on the remote machine. Active Oldest Votes.
